Have you noticed that the subjects that are the most taboo are also the ones causing the most issues lately? Those things we’re not supposed to talk about like; politics, sex, mental health…our not talking about them is causing so many world problems that the only way to not see the issues surrounding not being able to talk about them is if you have thrown your hands up in the air, abandoned everything, purchased a small llama farm in the middle of some remote location in the Alps where you’ve decided to live out your days in complete isolation with no electricity and only the warmth of the llamas to keep you alive.

Oh, sorry…was dreaming there for a minute.

The problem is that in order to live this wonderful life of solitude, you would need to have (which means being able to talk about, the biggest taboo subject of all, money.

I do not know why money is such a taboo subject. Maybe it’s because those who told us it wasn’t OK to talk about it didn’t understand it enough to talk about it themselves and so they made it an impolite topic of conversation, maybe those who started with money didn’t want those who didn’t to be able to understand it enough to have it, or maybe those who told us not to talk about it wanted the llama dream all to themselves. I don’t know. All I know is that not being able to talk about money in a really logical – it’s just money – type of way has left many of us lost, scared and seemingly alone.

Here’s the good thing…you’re not at all alone. However, here’s the pill I want you to swallow…now that you know you’re not alone, let’s break the taboo and talk about money.

It’s critically important, especially as creative types who would absolutely do what we’re doing for free…and so we are, for us to have these conversations and learn to shift our thinking about money.

The fact is that we need it. We need it to live and we need it to make our movies. The fact also is that there is more than enough of it to go around, we just need to believe and accept that. Think of it this way…someone just got funding for their film….yep, just now, while you were reading this… Why isn’t it you?

Why do you think you’re not getting the money you need in order to make your films and sustain yourself in the process?

Is it that you don’t believe it’s possible in general? It is. It happens everyday. So, that answer is just an excuse and it needs to leave your mind immediately if you want to have a career in film.

Is it that you don’t believe you can raise the money? That’s valid if that is your answer, but it’s also really unfair to yourself. Why would you not be able to raise money?

Is it that you don’t know how? Indie Movie Mastery is a solution. And, here’s the thing, it’s not the only solution. I say that to say that if you’re not moving forward in raising money for your movie because you don’t know how to do it, that’s just a skill set that you can absolutely learn from Indie Movie Mastery or somewhere else.

If your reason is that you don’t believe you can do it (which I would venture to guess is the reason most stop themselves from getting funding), I challenge you to really think about that.

Chances are you weren’t born into a film family, yet you were brave enough to dive into it. You went against the norm and went to film school, or bought a camera and have been making movies with your friends, you’ve heard “get a real job” more than one time, you moved half way across the country in order to pursue you’re dream, or all of the above applies.

Think about it. Just deciding to go into this industry…heck, just deciding to think about going into this industry at a professional level is BRAVE.

Raising money just requires you to be brave one more time. Take that leap of faith, make 2017 the year you decide to go for it. For one year, I’ll be there in an unprecedented way to help you in your leaping (you can read more about that under the solution below). But, here’s the thing, and I mean this, even if you don’t get help from me through Indie Movie Mastery, I still want you to do it. Be brave, make your movie, set yourself up for success.

But, don’t do it at a small level. Be brave in a big enough way that you are getting paid to make the movie you want to make. It’s up to us, the indie filmmakers, to understand that we’re the only ones that can make this a reality for ourselves. I know it’s scary, but honestly, it’s only scary at first. Once you learn how to do it, it’s actually really fun. When I was recording the Indie Movie Mastery videos, the funding module was the most exciting because it’s a skill that will take you through all the ups and downs and…again…it’s fun!

Ok, enough from me. I’m going to leave you with this…sit with yourself and really answer the following questions for yourself:

  • What do I really want out of life, out of this particular project, out of film?
  • Why do I want it?
  • Why am I not getting it?

It is important that we take charge of our own careers and it begins with having conversations around money. Let’s make the topic if money, especially film financing to the point that we’re taken care of in our careers, as taboo as talking about a new pair of socks we just bought.

To get you started, I’m giving away something that will help you right away so please check out the giveaway section.

If you have any questions, comments or thoughts, I’d love to hear them in our community page on Facebook.

Until then…

With All My Creativity,

Here’s a solution

For years after I produced my first feature, April Showers, I was asked how we were able to raise money, get name talent, get a free SWAT team, and release the film in a groundbreaking way both online and in theaters.

Then when we became the first production team to ever produce a narrative feature specifically for hulu.com, I began answering those questions in public as co-host of the podcast, Film Method, at various film festivals on panels and while being interviewed by others in the industry on their podcasts.

Sharing the secrets to how we had done all these things was a huge thrill for me because we are in an industry where people guard their secrets like their lives depend on it. Having been in the self-help industry for years, I see this secret guarding as a mindset of lack.

My opinion is that there is more than enough to go around and if I can empower just one filmmaker to share a story they really care about, I can help change the world.

And, so, with an attitude of abundance, I set out to create a way to empower filmmakers by educating and inspiring them on how they can make their passion projects a reality and create a career that sustains them financially and soulfully.

It is out of this idea that Indie Movie Mastery was born.

Indie Movie Mastery combines my 16+ years in the Hollywood entertainment industry along with my unique “productively positive” perspective and love for all things “how-to” into a program that will get you from a dream to a reality.

The program itself is over 8 hours of pre-recorded course work, blogs, worksheets, etc. diving into: development, funding, production, distribution and marketing all designed to have you working on your passion project while setting yourself up for long-term career success (read: Money).

In addition to this DIY, work at your own pace program, I have decided to peel back the curtain even further.

I’ve taken on the project I talk about above as a consulting producer and will be doing Facebook live videos in a secret group where I’ll walk you through the process of making a passion project come to fruition.

It is unprecedented access to me and it will only be available in 2017. It is live so you can ask questions and interact with me and others in the group.

I firmly believe that movies can change people lives and I believe that there is more than enough room for everyone. Your voice matters and I want to help you get it out in the world.

The course is in the pre-order stages at $3,000. It will go up to $3750 in January when it’s officially launched. We have payment plans available if you email indiemoviemastery@gmail.com to set up a call with my wonderful associate Alice.

You can also learn how you can win the course for free below.

I have to be honest with you, people have asked me why $3750 because working with me for a year typically costs $50,000. My response to that is that I truly want filmmakers to make the projects they really want to make so I’ve priced it low enough that it’s not going to break the bank. You can put the cost of the program into your project budget with ease. I also wanted to price it high enough that you’ll actually open it and do the work.

So many times we buy programs with the best of intentions and we forget about them. I know this program can change your life and I know you can make the movie you want to make if you do the work I’m setting in front of you so I priced it high enough that you’ll take it seriously.

Please you guys, really sit and ask yourself what you really want, then ask yourself why you’re not getting it. It’s the best time ever to be an indie filmmaker because we don’t have to wait for someone else to give us permission. Invest in yourself, invest in your dream and greenlight your own passion project today!
